Originally, glow in the dark contacts were used mainly as theatrical props. Actors and actresses would wear them in TV shows, movies, and even plays, to make themselves seem more frightening or supernatural to the audience. All of this Hollywood advertisement started a movement for people who wanted to stand out to their peers.
These days the contacts are often seen in eyes of teenagers who are looking to shock their friends and families. People who are into the rave and club scene are often caught wearing them because the contacts stand out underneath a black light. As well as club fanatics, the contacts are very popular during Halloween, seeing as they add that little extra flare to a costume.
Contacts are made from numerous different materials. Some of which are used to make Plexiglas and other things such as aquariums. To make the contacts glow, a layer of luminescent material is added onto the surface along with the color of that the customer chooses. The colors range from bright pink all the way to neon green and designs are added in if the buyer would like them that way.
Contact lenses that glow are very simply to get. One can purchase them at almost any specialty contact website. They are a little expensive but good quality contact lenses are not something to be cheap about, considering they go in your eye and can cause complications to your eyesight if the person is not careful.
A prescription is not always necessary to buying these lenses, though it is recommended. A person should always speak to their ophthalmologist before purchasing any sort of lenses. If one already has a prescription for glasses or otherwise, then it would be wise to get contacts that meet those requirements as well.
Wearing any type of contact lenses can cause complications with your eyesight and it is a good idea to be very careful while wearing them. Not wearing the lenses for too long at a time and making sure to put them in carefully is a good idea. Complications that can typically occur with using the contacts too frequently is eye irritation because of dryness and corneal ulcers. Problems can be easily prevented with simple sanitary techniques, like washing your hands before applying them, and storing them in a sterile environment.
Unlike most glowing products which are powered, so to speak, by the light, glow in the dark contact lenses do not fully glow unless under a black light. Even in extreme darkness, the glow is dull, but still slightly visible. During the daytime these contacts do not glow or show your eyes as any different color. Though at night, or more often under a black light, they turn into any color that you can imagine.
