Many people think that if you are using something that is disposable then you are going to be harming the environment simply because you aren’t going to keep them for a relatively long time. This can be true, definitely, but is this the case with contact lenses?
It depends on a few things. One is what kind you plan on wearing, how long they last you and if you only wear contacts or if you also wear glasses. It’s said that the average waste produced from contact lenses in a month is a few pounds. This really isn’t a big deal when you consider the total waste a human provides is about 1600 pounds. It starts looking like quite a small number. When you take into consideration all the supplies that come with contacts such as cleaner solutions, contact lens cases and other accessories it can start to add up, but not enough that would make you worry or consider changing your lifestyle.
If you are really worried about the impact you could have on our planet, your contacts or even glasses are not the place to start. Maybe when we have recycling mastered and you have slowed down and perfected your use of energy and waste and have nothing else to worry about you could start looking towards your vision needs.
Ultimately at the end of the day, it’s good that you are worried about it, but feel safe knowing that your contact lenses are not going to the big waste or worry at the end of your day!
