Be Your Own Optician! Choose Your Eyeglasses Like a Pro!

As you well know, people come in all shapes, sizes, colors, builds, orientations, personalities, nationalities, etc. You also know that eyeglasses come in several different shapes, colors, forms, etc. This begs the next question: how on earth do you begin to fit someone for eyewear with this myriad of a selection available and the different facial types to put them on? The answer to this question is probably more complicated than you think.

Any optician worth his or her salt will first consider your personality to fit you for your new glasses. Are you demure? Fun? Business-like? In control? Do you speak in a loud or softer tone of voice? Do you dress in trendy fashions, hippy style, or more subdued? What is your perfect frame? The answer to this question will be in the sum of what the optician sees and senses in you.

In addition to these ambiguities, the physical shape, form, and contours of your face are strong deciding factors behind the principle of fitting for eyeglasses (licensed opticians are specifically trained for this). Believe it or not, there is a technique in deciding which frames will best fit your face, and it boils down to contrast.

Contrast is the number one deciding factor in deciding which physical fit is best for the individual. The reason for this is balance.

In our psyche’s, we have learned to seek out symmetry in the world around us. A linear world is more pleasing to us and our sense of balance. When the scale is even, we are content. When the scale is tipped, we have anxiety, thus we are human. Our sense of wholeness – pertaining to the landscape of the human face and what adorns it – is connected to bringing asymmetry into balance.

For example, persons with angular-shaped faces generally look best in curved or rounded frame styles. Persons with rounder faces generally look best with angular frame styles.

When you search for your next pair of glasses, decide what your personality and facial shape are. Seek out qualities in your new glasses that conform to your personality and contrast your facial shape. However, don’t let these principles be your guiding factor alone. The fact remains that people are not only very different in physical qualities, but in our wants and needs as well. These ideas are only ideas and at the end of the day, you cannot allow an optician to tell you what you do or don’t enjoy wearing!

Choose wisely but more importantly, have fun! By the time you’ve made your decision, you can rest assured that you’ll be excited to wear your new spectacles!
