The Expanding World of Contact Lenses

Many people the world over require some sort of correction for poor eyesight. For years, glasses were one of the only few hopes for these people. However, as the years went by, technology gradually advanced. The lenses of glasses gradually became thinner until the creation of contact lenses. Today they offer a wide range of benefits to those who wear them. They can be more attractive than glasses. They do not get foggy and do not get wet. Moreover they offer UV protection in addition to the ability to change eye colour.

Contacts were first thought of by Leonardo Da Vinci in the 16th century, but were not developed until about 1888. The first were made of blown glass but have greatly improved since then. Now, they are made of soft, flexible materials that can allow oxygen to pass through them in order to properly hydrate the eyes.

For many years, only those with slightly deteriorated eyesight were able to wear them. Those with astigmatism, hyperopia and myopia were not able to wear contacts. However, with the developments in recent years, toric lenses are available to those with more advanced vision problems. There are also contacts available for those who wish to physically correct misshapen corneas. Orthokeratology contact lenses reshape the cornea throughout the night so that there is no need to wear them during the day.

New advancements in technology have also added the added benefit of UV protection. There are two classes of UV protection. Class I protects up to 90 percent of UV rays, while class II only protects up to 75 percent. However, it should be noted that since contact lenses to not cover the entire eye, sunglasses are still recommended for full coverage.

For several years, people have been able to change the colour of their eyes with the help of contacts. There are many different varieties. Some simply enhance the natural eye colour while others completely alter the appearance of them. There are also special effect contacts that can give the appearance of cat eyes, flames, swirls, etc.

Since so many people have different preferences pertaining to how they wear their contact lenses, there are several options available. Some can be changed daily, weekly, bi-weekly, or even monthly. There are also options for people who wish to leave them in all day and all night instead of taking them out at the end of every day.

There are so many different varieties and capabilities of that there is almost always a possibility for anyone to wear them. It is important, however, to speak with an eye care professional before attempting to use contact lenses.
