The Freedom of Extended Wear Contacts

Those who wear contacts know the tedious routine of putting them in each morning, then taking them out at night. Because they can block some of the flow of oxygen to the cornea, lenses must be removed for extended periods of time. Your eyes deserve a rest from contacts.

But there are many contact wearers who really don’t like to have to remove their lenses, then put them back in, only to remove them again. Now there is a new contact lens material developed by manufacturers which lets oxygen through the contacts to the cornea, thus enabling you to wear them days or weeks at a time without risking the health of your eyes.

This amazing material allows about six times more oxygen to pass through than regular soft contact lenses. Even if you leave your contacts in for days at a time, the extra-permeable silicone hydrogel solves the previous problem of oxygen deprivation, giving you a new freedom from your old routine.

If your eyes do not feel comfortable, it is very important to pay attention so that you might avoid an eye infection. Remove the contacts immediately if your eyes feel scratchy or irritated, and give them a good long rest of from six to eight hours. Then before you put them back in, rinse the lenses very thoroughly. Call your doctor if the discomfort does not go away. There may be some people for whom extended wear lenses are not the best choice.

As far as cost, extended wear contact lenses are cheaper than daily disposables but a bit more expensive than the weekly or monthly disposable lenses. You will save money on cleaning and storing solutions since you do not take them out every day to maintain. Because of these factors, cost becomes less of an issue.

Check with your doctor to see if you are a good candidate for extended wear contacts if you like the idea of wearing them for several days at a time and reducing the amount of time you normally spend on the process.
